Nine Stone, Seven Miles and One Incredible Journey!

How a personal challenge became the motivation for an extraordinary transformation.

Every so often, someone walks into my Slimming World group with a goal that means so much more to them than simply losing weight.

For Richard Andrews, that goal was to climb a hill in Wales. At the time, it was something he did not feel physically able to achieve, but he was determined to change that. What followed was an incredible year of commitment, determination and growing confidence. In June 2025, Richard's story made the local newspaper, The Comet, after he lost an amazing nine stone and completed the seven-mile each way trek he had set his heart on.

From a distant dream to a wonderful achievement

Richard embraced Slimming World's Food Optimising plan, discovering that he could enjoy satisfying meals while making changes to his eating habits. He also began becoming more active, starting with the Couch to 5k programme and gradually building his fitness through Slimming World's Body Magic approach. Over time, the things that had once seemed impossible began to feel achievable. Richard even reached the point where he could run all the way to work!

Then came the moment he had been working towards.

A year after setting himself that challenge, Richard completed his seven-mile trek in Wales, supported by fellow members of our Slimming World group. He described the experience as amazing, with breathtaking views and an enormous sense of achievement.

The power of believing you can

What I love about Richard's story is that it was never simply about losing nine stone. It was about having a reason to begin, finding the determination to keep going and discovering new possibilities along the way. There were changes to his eating habits, improvements in his fitness and, perhaps most importantly, a growing belief in what he could achieve. The support of his fellow members was also a lovely part of the story. They had encouraged him throughout his journey, and some were there to share that special moment when he completed his challenge.

That is what makes our Slimming World community so special to me.

So proud of Richard

I remember telling The Comet how proud we all were of Richard, and that feeling has certainly not changed. As a consultant, I have the privilege of seeing people make changes that can have an enormous impact on their lives. Sometimes those changes are reflected on the scales, but often the most meaningful achievements happen well beyond them. For Richard, it was standing on that hill in Wales, looking at the view and knowing he had done something that once felt out of reach.

Nine stone lost. Seven miles twice completed. One extraordinary achievement.

Richard's journey is a wonderful reminder that when we combine a meaningful goal with determination, practical changes and the encouragement of people who genuinely care, remarkable things can happen.

I could not be prouder!
