A Celebration of Possibility: Learning to Believe in Yourself

From losing hope in myself to losing over eight stone, building an award-winning business and discovering opportunities I could never have imagined.

There was a time when I had almost given up believing I could change my weight. I had tried before, experienced disappointment and reached a point where I wondered whether this was simply how life was going to be. I knew I wanted things to be different, but wanting something and believing you can achieve it are two very different things.

When I first walked through the doors of Slimming World as a member, I certainly was not imagining the life I have today. I was not thinking about running a business, receiving awards or standing in front of a camera at Slimming World Head Office celebrating achievements I could never have imagined. I was simply someone who wanted to lose weight and needed help to believe it might actually be possible.

What I found was more than a healthy eating plan. I found people who understood, encouragement when things felt difficult and a way of making changes that fitted into everyday life. Slimming World offered me a programme to follow and the support to help me achieve my weight loss goals. I took that opportunity, trusted the process and gradually began to see what was possible.

The weight started to come off, but something else was changing too. My confidence was growing. Every achievement, every challenge overcome and every week I continued to make choices that supported my goals helped me rebuild something I had lost along the way: belief in myself. I went on to lose more than eight stone and have maintained that weight loss. That achievement changed far more than the number on the scales. It changed how I saw myself, what I thought I was capable of and what I believed might be possible in the years ahead.

What I did not realise at the time was that I was learning something that would eventually influence far more than my relationship with food and weight. I was discovering how powerful it can be to have someone listen, encourage you and help you recognise strengths you have stopped seeing in yourself.

Then another opportunity came along.

Slimming World offered me the chance to become a Consultant, to work in partnership with an organisation whose programme had already made such a difference to my life. Here was an opportunity to build my own business, learn new skills and support other people who might be feeling exactly as I had once felt. Once again, I was being invited to believe that something was possible. I was offered training, established methods, ongoing development and support from people who wanted me to succeed. I embraced those opportunities, put what I learned into practice and worked hard to build groups where members would feel welcomed, understood and supported.

It has not always been easy. Running your own business brings challenges, responsibilities and moments when you question whether you are getting things right. There have been difficult weeks, lessons learned and times when progress has felt slower than I wanted. Success does not happen simply because an opportunity is offered. It takes commitment, consistency, a willingness to learn and the determination to keep going.

Over the years, my groups have grown, my experience has developed and I have been fortunate to receive recognition for the business I have built and the results achieved within my groups. Looking at these three photographs, taken at Slimming World celebration events over three different years, I feel an enormous sense of pride. There I am, holding certificates that recognise achievements I could never have imagined when I first joined as a member. Each photograph represents another stage of my journey, another year of learning, developing and discovering what I am capable of. I am proud of those achievements. I have worked hard for them and I think it is important to allow ourselves to acknowledge when we have done something well. Yet what makes those photographs particularly meaningful is knowing what sits behind them.

Behind every certificate are the members who walk through our doors each week. People who arrive feeling hopeful, nervous, uncertain or perhaps not particularly confident that this time will be different. People who have families, jobs, responsibilities and challenges that do not disappear simply because they have decided to lose weight. I recognise so much of my former self in those first conversations. Some members arrive ready to embrace everything. Others need time, reassurance and encouragement before they begin to trust themselves again. I understand that. I remember what it felt like to want change without being entirely convinced I could achieve it.

Watching members begin to believe in themselves is one of the greatest privileges of being a Consultant. Seeing someone achieve a weight loss they once thought impossible, hearing them talk about feeling healthier or noticing the confidence growing in someone who initially struggled to see their own potential reminds me why I chose to do this work. Their achievements belong to them. They are the people making the changes, navigating the difficult days and choosing to continue. My role is to provide the knowledge, encouragement, understanding and support that help them along the way.

As my confidence and experience grew, so did my curiosity about what else might be possible. Running my own business and supporting other Consultants to develop theirs deepened my interest in people, motivation and the decisions we make about our lives. Those experiences eventually led me to train as an accredited coach and establish my own coaching business, supporting people who want to make meaningful changes in their personal or professional lives.

More recently, I have also begun supporting another growing business with its website and social media presence, bringing together skills I have developed through years of running, promoting and growing my own business. It is another opportunity to learn, contribute and put experience into practice in a different setting. None of these opportunities was something I could have imagined when I first walked through the doors of Slimming World as a member.

Today, whether I am supporting someone with their weight, helping a Consultant develop their business, working with a coaching client or supporting another business to become more visible, I recognise something familiar. People often have far more potential than they recognise in themselves. Sometimes what makes the difference is having someone alongside them who helps them discover it.

I am enormously grateful to the members who trust me to be part of their journeys and to the communities we have built together. The friendships, conversations, laughter, encouragement and genuine care within our groups are part of what makes them so special. I am grateful to Slimming World too. First, for the programme and support that helped me transform my own life. Then for the opportunity to build a business around helping others, with training, guidance and a framework that has continued to support my development.

Neither journey has been without challenges, but both have given me opportunities that I might never have recognised for myself all those years ago.

There is something quite extraordinary about looking back and realising how much can change when you take an opportunity, receive the right support and begin to discover what you are capable of. Perhaps that is why these photographs mean so much to me. They are not simply a record of business success or certificates collected over the years. They remind me of the person who first walked into a Slimming World group, uncertain, lacking confidence and wondering whether change was possible.

I wish I could show her these photographs.

I wish I could tell her that one day she would not only achieve and maintain her weight loss, but would go on to help hundreds of other people work towards their own goals. That she would build a business, develop skills she had never imagined needing and discover confidence in areas of her life that once felt completely out of reach. Most of all, I wish I could tell her that the way she felt about herself at that moment did not have to determine what happened next.

That is the message I want to share, whether you are considering joining Slimming World as a member, thinking about becoming a Consultant, exploring a new business idea or simply wondering whether there might be more possibilities in your own life than you currently recognise. You do not need to have everything worked out before you begin. You do not need to feel completely confident or know exactly where the journey will lead. Sometimes the first step is simply allowing yourself to hope that things could be different. Sometimes it is accepting support from people who can see possibilities that you cannot yet see for yourself… and sometimes, years later, you find yourself looking at three photographs and realising just how far that first step has taken you.

These photographs celebrate achievement, but the story behind them is about something much more important.

Hope. Opportunity. Support. Belief.

A celebration of possibility.
